where引导定语从句时，其作为关系副词，在定语从句中做地点状语，且其前有一个表地点的先行词。此时，where可以转换成“介词+which”的结构。where引导的定语从句只能位于主句之后或句中，不能位于句首。
where引导的定语从句和状语从句的区别
状语从句是从句的形式做状语，修饰的是主句的谓语动词而定语从句，是从句的形式做定语，修饰的是主句中的某个名词、代词区分的话。简单的说，从句修饰主句谓语的是状语从句从句修饰主句中的名词性成分的，是定语从句。
where引导的定语从句，其先行词是表示地点的；另一方面，与大多数定语从句一样，where在定语从句中代表缺失的句子成分――地点状语（阅读时应该有定语从句缺了地点状语的感觉），如：
It only takes us a few minutes to get to the place where they lived.我们只花了几分钟时间到达他们所居住的地方。（这里live后边缺了地点状语，完整的句子应为 They lived in the place。）
We have reached the point where a big change is needed.我们已经到达了必顺做出大改变的时候了。（这里定语从句变为完整的句子是：A big change is needed at this point.）
where引导的状语从句用于表示主句谓语动词的地点。与定语从句不同，其前没有（表示地点的）先行词。
I found my books where I had left them.我找到了我的书，是在我丢了书的地方。

where引导的定语从句where可以省略吗
1、in which，for which，on which，at which这些都是定语从句里面，由which引导的定语从句，介词提前。
2、引导定语从句时where与in which有时可互换，有时不能互换。
3、当“介词+which”在定语从句中作时间、地点和原因状语时，可以用相应的关系副词when,where和why来替换。
4、where根据情况可以等于in which,at which,on which等。
5、关系副词若要换成“介词+which”只能是for which。
where在定语从句中做什么成分可省
在定语从句中，引导词作句子的宾语时可省略。但是where作状语，不能省略。
在定语从句中，作句子的宾语可以省略，但是介词提前，也不能省略。I like music （which） has good lyrics with.=I like music with which has good lyrics.
地点状语，不可省。
where引导定语从句的例句：
1.She's got herself into a dangerous situation where she's likely to lose her life.
她将自己置于了危险的境地，而且很有可能丢掉性命。
2.I miss the place where I lived in my childhood.
我很想念我童年居住过的地方。
3.This is the place where he works.
这是他工作的地点。
4.Tell me the place where the accident happened yesterday.
告诉我昨天发生事故的地点。
所以如果从句完整，不缺主语宾语，那么关系词就要选择关系副词。
关系副词有三类：
1.Where 当先行词是地点，where在从句做地点状语。
I remember the school where we had spent 3 years.
2.When 当先行词是时间， when 在从句做时间状语。
Do you still remember these days when we were students.
3.Why 当先行词是reason， why 在从句做原因状语。
Can you tell me the reason why he leave me.
when引导的定语从句与状语从句的区别
when引导的定语从句更容易被误认为是状语从句，一般需要从意思上来与状语从句区分。另外，when引导的定语从句前边的先行词多为表时间的名词如hour、day、evening、morning、time等，这一点也有助于辨别。
